• 1955 J.M. ROBERTS RESIDENCE BY RICHARD NEUTRA

While the Roberts' original request was for a more conventional ranch style home, Neutra brought them around to his purely modernist aesthetic. Neutra's modular grid, spider leg detailing, & asymmetric compositions combine to create a harmony of balance, transparency, & lightness. 5x7 HABS documentation, 12 views, 2017.

  • Built around 1881 this folk-Victorian farmhouse was meticulously restored by Stephen & Sherry Schafer between 1996 and 2026. In other words – we're still working on it.

That's part of the reson for my interest in historic architectural photography, after you've crawled through a few attics and boiler rooms and seen the owls roosting in the rafters of the barn, you want to learn more about the architecture, who built it, and why it's there. Eventually that helps inform the process of photography as you learn which character defining features are important and where to focus your attention to tell the whole story.
