• In 1955 Julius Shulman photographed the J.M. Roberts residence, probably with Richard Neutra by his side.

Shulman chose an angle downslope from the dramatic spider legs for this view. Fortunately a 1980s fire pit was in the same spot and allowed us to duplicate Shulman’s view for a Then and Now photo. Sometimes you get lucky.

  • HAER DOCUMENTATION OF THE FIRST STREET BRIDGE REQUIRED FLAT LIGHT TO MITIGATE THE SHADOW AREAS ON THE NORTH ELEVATION. THAT MEANT TRYING TO SCHEDULE BETWEEN RAIN STORMS WHEN THE CLOUD COVER WAS LOW. IN THE MORNING WHEN MY ASSISTANT AND I SET UP THIS FIRST VIEW, THE END OF THE STORM WAS JUST PASSING REQUIRING SOME RAIN GEAR UNTIL THE DRIZZLE STOPPED. THAT’S WHY WE ALWAYS KEEP A COUPLE OF UMBRELLAS IN THE TRUCK. (USUALLY THE BLACK GOLF UMBRELLA IS USED AS A WIND BREAK.)

  • HAER DOCUMENTATION OF THE FIRST STREET BRIDGE REQUIRED A HIGH ANGLE FOR A CONTEXT VIEW IN THE TIGHT URBAN ENVIRONMENT. WE HAD PLANNED TO RENT A CHERRY PICKER AND HAVE TRAFFIC BLOCKED BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER POSSIBILITY. THAT MEANT TALKING OUR WAY ONTO THE NEARBY AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT BY OFFERING BAKED GOODS TO THE BUILDING SUPER. THAT GOT US ONTO THE ROOF FOR THIS PERFECT VIEW FROM A HIGHER VANTAGE THAN THE LIFT WOULD HAVE ALLOWED. AND THAT TERRIFIC BACKGROUND OF DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES’ SKYSCRAPERS PUTS THE BRIDGE IN ITS URBAN CONTEXT PERFECTLY.

IT’S HANDY WHEN WE ARE WORKING FOR A MUNICIPALITY THAT HAS THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT ON HAND, BUT WE CAN ALWAYS RENT A LIFT IF NECESSARY. THE TRICK IS GETTING THE TRIPOD, FILM, LARGE FORMAT CAMERA AND DIGITAL CAMERA IN THE TINY BUCKET ALONG WITH ME.

HAER (Marine) documentation to mitigate auction of the vessel.
It is always a trick with large format to photograph from one moving (bobbing) boat to another. The trick was to begin with these across-the-harbor views before the wind came up in the afternoon. The flat light really helps the documentary nature of the photographs by filling-in shadows.

  • THIS LOUSY iPHONE PHOTO SHOWS THE DARK CONDITIONS IN THE “LOOKOUT GALLERY” ABOVE THE MAIN SORTING ROOM IN THE SANTA MONICA POST OFFICE. HABS DOCUMENTATION OF THE SMPO REQUIRED 50 VIEWS OF ALL THREE FLOORS AND THIS TUNNEL BUILT FOR SPYING ON EMPLOYEES TO MAKE SURE THEY WEREN’T STEALING MAIL. THE PROBLEM (AS YOU CAN['T] SEE) IS THE WALLS ARE PAINTED BLACK AND THERE IS NO LIGHTING, SO THAT WAY THE INSPECTORS COULD BE STEALTHY AND SPY THROUGH LITTLE GLASS SLITS IN THE WALLS AND HOLES IN THE FLOOR. EVEN WITH OUR 300’ OF EXTENSION CORDS AND LED LIGHTS IT WAS A HARD PHOTOGRAPH TO MAKE. IN THE END I NEEDED TO MAKE THE HALL LOOK BLACK WHILE ADDING ENOUGH LIGHT TO MAKE OUT THE SNEAKY DETAILS.
